Biju Festival is a colorful festival celebrated by the Chakma community in Tripura. It is also known as Rongali Bihu and Jaat Bihu. Biju Festival is celebrated with great pomp in Tripura. This festival is also celebrated as the beginning of the New Year. Biju Festival is a religious festival celebrated for three days. People celebrating Biju bid farewell to the passing year and welcome the new year with pomp.

This year Biju Festival will be celebrated from 13 April to 15 April. Biju is celebrated on the last day of the Bengal calendar, which is called Chaitra-Sankranti. Biju is a festival that celebrates the first harvest after the first rain of the agricultural season.

The purpose behind celebrating this festival of the Chakma community is to create awareness about the traditions and culture of the Chakma community among the younger generation. On this day houses are specially cleaned and decorated with flowers. Biju is also celebrated by other tribes and ethnic groups in Tripura such as the Tripuri, Tangchangya, Marma, Mro, Khiang, Khumi and Chak.

One of the main attractions of this festival is the special Biju dance, which is accompanied by the rhythm of traditional musical instruments like the tassel and flute, some of which are crafted from bamboo. History says that the first Bihu dance performance was held in 1964. Every form of Bihu is associated with a different phase of the agricultural calendar. It has three types, ‘Bohag Bihu’, also known as Rongali Bihu, ‘Kongali Bihu’ or Kati Bihu and ‘Bhogali Bihu’, also known as Magh Bihu or Maghar Domahi.
